Snow Storm
By John Hugo, 15 January 08
Happy New year to all! Looking forward to a great new year with wonderful books and great author events! Despite the snow storm yesterday we had a great day and even got interviewed by the Tribune for being the only non-chain open in Andover! Be well and buy some books! -JMH
Great Fall List
By John Hugo, 15 October 07
The cool temps are here, summer is over, but alas the Fall books are arriving and we have some great new titles! Leading off is Ken Follett’s sequel to Pillars of the Earth, World Without End. If you missed the original – don’t missed this epic novel. Talk to you soon. -John
Mary Karr Event
By John Hugo, 5 May 07
I attended and provided books for Mary Karr’s Event last night at Phillips Academy and she was wonderful! One of the funniest authors I have heard or met before. I think she really could do stand-up comedy. I was only dismayed by her suggestion to buy her books online — when will authors learn that they need bookstores first and foremost? — it’s a nice luxury once you have best-selling novels to send ’em all online — but the independent booksellers put her on the map – not a website. Oh well…the battle continues! -JMH
A Note from Carrie Brown, author of "The Rope Walk"
By John Hugo, 7 April 07
Dear John,
It was a pleasure to meet you last week – thank you for coming to dinner and for all your efforts to help “The Rope Walk” find readers who will enjoy it. There are many forces competing for a reader’s attention these days – thank goodness for knowledgable bookstores, the beloved champions and heroes of writers and readers everywhere! I’m grateful to you for giving “The Rope Walk” a place on your shelves – I hope it flies off them!

Spring...or not?
By John Hugo, 2 April 07
Well, we tasted a bit of better things to come over the past weekend – but today we are back to dreary winter-like weather. Depressing – but not much more to go before spring finally arrives. I just finished Coal Black Horse a stunning Civil War Novel and can’t wait to start on Khaled Hosseini’s new novel coming this May – we just got the galley…ahh the few perks. Stay Warm! -JMH
Cricket Facts
By John Hugo, 23 March 07
Did you know that you can count the chirps of a cricket in a 14 second time period, then add 40 to that number and you will get today’s temperature…try it you’ll see…also just wanted to check if anyone is reading this blog….. -JMH
Global Warming
By John Hugo, 23 March 07
Global warming is certainly coming to the forefront of environmental action and certainly politics. 70 degree temperatures this January certainly added awareness to the masses in the northeast. In the bookworld, Al Gore’s potent and alarming Book “Inconvenient Truth” has made it eminently clear that we all need to play our part in fixing this problem in the coming years. If you are interested in more information and gathering with others who care about taking action, there is a rally this Saturday morning at the Town Hall at 10:30 am. -JMH
Textbooks Are In
By John Hugo, 20 March 07
I don’t know if we have any readers of this blog yet (if you are out there – post a comment…) but we have received and shelved about 90% of the Spring semester textbooks. If you live locally come on down and see us before the mad rush of next week. Other than that, it doesn’t feel much like spring, but I think we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, keep on reading! -JMH
